USFWS: Scientists forced to alter findings

In yet another attempt to gut protection for endangered species, scientists at the Fish and Wildlife Service report that they have been required to change their scientific findings in order to justify reduced environmental regulation.

More than 200 scientists employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service say they have been directed to alter official findings to lessen protections for plants and animals, a survey released Wednesday says.

The survey of the agency's scientific staff of 1,400 had a 30% response rate and was conducted jointly by the Union of Concerned Scientists and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.

More than half the scientists surveyed said they had observed or been part of cases where scientific findings were changed because of polical pressure from developers and other economic interests.

Redpolls dying in Alaska

Scientists are uncertain why increasing numbers of redpolls, a type of finch, are dying in Alaska.

Scientists expected to find an outbreak of salmonella, but the bacteria haven't shown up in tissue samples. No obvious symptoms of other diseases have been seen sither, but it's suspected that bird feeders are spreading some deadly organism from bird to bird. Avid backyard birders should be aware of the importance of keeping feeders safe for the many birds who use them.
