Alaskan tanker breaks apart

An oil tanker which got caught in a storm in the Bering Sea has now broken apart, resulting in the largest oil spill near Alaska since the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989.

The freighter was carrying 480,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil and 21,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and the spill was offshore of the environmentally sensitive area of Unalaska Island, near a large wildlife sanctuary and a major salon fishery. The spill is already two and a half miles wide, and spreading. Six crew members are still missing, and feared dead.
