And I'm away...

I'll be traveling for the next week and a half. Both time and net access will be limited, I'm afraid, so you're not likely to hear much from me. I'll update when I can. In the meantime, here's a white-tailed blue flycatcher, which can still be seen in parts of Africa. While I'm away, you might visit some of the related weblogs listed below on the right.

Baghdad Burning

I don't go off-topic very often here, but this piece of today's post by Iraqi blogger riverbend broke my heart. Everything in Iraq these days is pretty sad, really. She's talking about the assault on Samarra, and the recent hostage-takings around her country.

I wasn't very sympathetic though, when that Islamic group came down from London to negotiate releasing Kenneth Bigley. I do hope he is returned alive, but where are all these Islamic groups while Falluja, Samarra, Sadir City and other places are being bombed? Why are they so concerned with a single British citizen when hundreds of Iraqis are dying by the month? Why is it 'terrorism' when foreigners set off bombs in London or Washington or New York and it's a 'liberation' or 'operation' when foreigners bomb whole cities in Iraq? Are we that much less important?

Red tide off western U.S. coast

A massive bloom of toxic algae has formed off the western coast of the U.S — this one is 30 miles wide. Red tides have gotten more common in coastal waters over the past few decades, and can poison shellfish and potentially kill people who eat them. In this bloom, concentrations have reached 11 million cells per liter, well past the 200,000 cells per liter found in red tides last year. If a storm comes up while the bloom is near shore, it could be pushed into the shallow water where shellfish normally live. The situation is being monitored by the Olympic Region Harmful Algae Bloom partnership.
