Interview with Lynn Scarlett

Grist Magazine has posted an interview with Lynn Scarlett, an assistant secretary for the Bush Administration's Department of the Interior. She apparently has a big hand in designing and implementing the administration's environmental policy, and in this interview explains her ideas about "environmental entrepreneuership". She also critiques the environmental movement. Take a look.

Time running out for the Southern Ocean?

The BBC reports that fish piracy has so damaged the ecology of the Southern Ocean that even an international coalition may not be able to stop it. Illegal fishing of the Patagonian toothfish (called "white gold" in Australia) is disrupting the food chain both above and beneath the waves.

The Southern Ocean is a continuous band of warm water that circles the southern hemisphere of the earth, and is hugely influential in climate control.


Bush Administration proposes to let EPA forgo outside input on pesticides

The new rule would let the EPA decide on their own whether a given substance might harm endangered species, without requiring them to obtain outside information.

This comes in the wake of a successful lawsuit by conservation groups that resulted in a judge banning dozens of pesticides from use around endangered salmon runs in the northwest.


WWF report on toxic chemicals

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund finds that both people and wildlife are widely contaminated by common household chemicals, not all of which have been studied for toxicity. The WWF is launching a "DeTox" campaign, trying to push the EU to pass stronger laws regulating these chemicals.
