Coral reefs in continuing danger

The World Resources Institute has published a report which states that two-thirds of all coral reefs in the Caribbean are endangered. Warming of ocean waters, pollution, and sediment runoff are among the problems coral reefs have been facing, but the recent increase in hurricane activity is also taking a toll.

Coral reefs are important in maintaining ocean wildlife and biodiversity. They also bring in valuable tourist dollars to Caribbean island nations from fisheries and tourism, amounting to over $3 billion for the year 2000.
