How the Bush administration changes the rules

This article from the Washington Post is the second of three covering how the Bush administration has used regulatory changes to subvert science in the name of politics. The article explains how a small change in wording of one regulation has allowed the continued use of many substances which are scientifically questionable, to say the least. In particular atrazine, a common agricultural herbicide which according to research is linked to mutations in frogs and cancer in human males.

It's a case study in how this administration misuses science. Read it.

Greenland ice sheet melting faster than predicted

You might recall when I posted that the Greenland ice sheet was likely to melt entirely. That process was expected to take about 1,000 years however.

New research reports that the Greenland ice sheet is melting faster than expected. The ice had been melting at a rate of about one meter per year. New evidence shows that rate has increased, perhaps to as much as one meter per month. The increase seems to be primarily due to increasing warmth of the air.

One scientist says:

"We can say for certain that the rate of melting has increased and we can say for certain that the height of the ice-sheet is falling, even allowing for increased ice-flow.

"There is no doubt that something very major is happening here."
