In the News

Off we go...

Okay, the new blog is available at the base URL, and the RSS feed is also up and running. This blog will live on, and that page contains a link to the archives as well.

Word Press going live

Okay, I'm just about ready to take WordPress live. I don't have the RSS feed working yet. I'll post on the new weblog when I do.

You can still reach the weblog at the old URL: http://earth.jnfr.com , but soon you'll see the new blog there rather than this one. This weblog and the archives will be linked on this page: http://earth.jnfr.com/old.html . That link will live on the new front page too.

See you there!

About the site

I know I've been inactive for a long time. I'm getting ready to start the site up again. However, I'm going to install WordPress and begin using that software for the blog, so it will take a little time to get it running. Once that happens, I will have a new RSS feed, and the current one (which isn't working well), will be inactive. All the old content will be left on-site with a link, though, so nothing will be lost.

Senate looks to ANWR for future cash

In a shift that may signal the last round over oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, the Senate voted to allow language into the budget bill that assumes income from drilling in ANWR over the next decade. The House has already endorsed ANWR oil drilling. The money expected from this would be shared between the federal government and the state of Alaska.

EDIT: Fixed title to be more accurate.

Ever-changing earth

Evidence of global warming and associated climate change continues to mount, and while most scientists now believe human activities have a major impact on warming, there are other factors at work as well. And even as warming proceeds, many of challenges we might face are still unpredictable. Still, it's the nature of the earth to change over time, not just in climate but in many ways. Over at the BBC, they've posted some impressive photo comparisons of different parts of the earth, showing how they look today vs. how they have looked in recent times.

Picture of the Day

Flowers of the Saguaro cactus.

I hear the spring flower displays in the deserts of western North America should be especially nice this year, because they had so much rain over the winter.

Kyoto Protocol implemented

Today was the first official day for the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to control carbon emissions and thereby impact global warming. The United States is the world's largest carbon polluter, but has not signed the Protocol. Nonetheless enough of the world's other industrial nations signed on, so the effort will begin at least.

The New York Times describes the mixed feelings engendered by the Protocol. And over at Grist, Amanda Griscom Little discusses the response (or lack thereof) of the environmental community.

Speaking of strange animals...

They don't come much stranger than the star-nosed mole. This article in the New York Times has the whole story on these tiny mammals, and the intricate adaptations that allow them to eat faster than any other mammal ever recorded.
